orthotics /orthot'
iks/ [Gk, orthos, straight], the design and use of external
appliances to support a paralyzed muscle, promote a specific
motion, or correct musculoskeletal deformities.
Orthotics is the field of knowledge related to bracing a
segment (or segments) of the body in order to support, correct,
align and or prevent further deformity. The certified orthotist
designs manufactures and fits braces and foot orthoses.
An initial assessment appointment
is usually the first step in which the certified orthotist
assesses the need and most suitable orthotic appliance.
This may involve range of motion testing, muscle strength
testing, gait analysis, patient history and patent goal
assessment. This is most often followed by a casting or
digitizing of the effected body segment(s).
Once the orthotic device is
fabricated and fit to the client, adjustments are essential.
Follow-up appointments are booked as needed to adjust the
orthoses.
Many orthotic devices are covered
through Alberta Aids to Daily Living (AADL), Blue Cross,
NIHB, DVA and the Worker's Compensation Board
Orthotic devices not covered by these
agencies are often covered through private health plans.
Troppman Prosthetics and Orthotics
