prosthetics
/ prosthet'iks/ [Gk, prosthesis, addition], the branch of
allied health concerned with the design, construction, and
attachment of artificial limbs to replace function of a missing
body part.
Amputation of a limb creates a major change to your life and
a sudden change in body image. Functionally, amputees can
expect to return to many of their previous activities. New
amputees should expect an in hospital intensive rehabilitation
period of up to three months with variations of this depending
on rates of healing and your general health.
As part of the post operative care of a new amputee, bandaging
with either a tensor or stump shrinker, is very important.
Stump bandaging decreases swelling, promote healing, shapes
and prepares the residual limb for prosthetic fitting.
The first prosthesis that the amputee receives is temporary
and allows for gradual weight bearing through the residual
limb while it is shaping and provides a means for the amputee
to retrain their walking pattern (gait).
Once the residual limb is fully healed and is no longer changing
due to swelling, the amputee is measured and fitted with a
permanent prosthesis which is made for long-term use and has
a more natural appearance.
Troppman Prosthetics highly trained and professional staff
design and manufacture everything from upper extremity to
lower extremity prosthesis using the most current technology.
By continually researching new procedures in the prosthetics
industry, we are able to enhance the lives of our clients,
allowing many of them to return to their pre-injury vocation
and lifestyle.
